JOHN COSTELLO
My fishing interest began with my first catch, deep in the Snowy Mountains, whilst away camping with my family. Surrounded by the snow gums, this chance encounter with tiny brown trout in a little stream kicked off my journey to uncover the wonders of the fishing world. We moved to Queensland and each day I’d share my lunch with the local Bream living under the bridge I crossed to get to school. Every afternoon, for the next 10 years, I’d be either sanding timber off-cuts into lures or down by the river resting hand lines around sticks in the sand and casting lures until dark, searching for that bite. As a teenager, I’d get dropped off before sunrise and return to the ramp after sunset. Full days of casting lures, captivated by nature and the thrill of that next bite. I started filming to capture the magic for my grandfather, so we could share our love for nature and fishing escapism, in his lounge room.
More than 20 years on, I’m still capturing the adventure to share with family and friends, still designing lures, searching for the next bite and finding the adventure. I’ve recently returned from the ultimate fishing trip around Australia, chasing a range of species. Each week I continue the fishing adventure on my kayak, tinny and jet ski. Sharing the fishing journey with my family, my friends and now you, has been a great pleasure, something I’ll always be grateful for.
